To be clear - it's not about buying a Peek today. It's about what version of Peek you have when you purchase the device. If the version is 1.04/06/07/08 you are eligible for an upgrade to Pronto. So if in two weeks or two months you go to Target/Costco etc. and you end up with version prior to 1.09 you can get upgraded to Pronto by either arranging an upgrade or purchasing an upgrade cable and doing it yourself.

@bigmak - You CAN purchase any Peek right now and upgrade to Pronto at no additional cost.

If you have a Peek with any software version PREVIOUS to 1.09. such as 1.04, 1.06, 1.07 or 1.08, we will grandfather you into Peek Pronto.

However, if you buy a Peek Classic with 1.09 on it, the upgrade fee will be 30 dollars.

is there something in the 1.09 classic firmware that would prevent an upgrade to pronto firmware, or will the pronto peeks be on their own separate servers from now on?

@gabe and Tom: thanks for the clarification!

@dkg: If I had to hazard a guess, I'm assuming they will both have the same firmware update (Pronto and Classic). However, the driver will recognize the version of the unit it's installed on and act accordingly. That's the way it usually happens in industry, it's easier than having separate drivers.

    • CommentTimeMar 24th 2009

@bigmak: ??? the driver is from prolific, not peek. its for the usb to serial chip in the upgrade cable. if you mean the software updater will know whether its connected to a classic or pronto, that would make sense. but not a lot of sense, since the upgrade cable costs half as much as the upgrade fee and anyone could just run the old 1.08 updater software with the new firmware file.

Software will be different on Peek Classic 1.09 and Peek Pronto 1.09. Peek Classic will connect to whatever server it is connecting to now. Peek Pronto will use the turbo charged Pronto server.

    Clear as mud right? :-)

A question I don't see: will the "lifetime" service on a Costco peek purchased now be upped to pronto with the upgrade?

And, when did the new keyboard get phased in? Is it in the current Costco peeks?

The push gmail makes the difference for me, so I'm in! I'd like google talk, too, but it's an imperfect world.

@whoa - think of service plans and software versions as two different animals. So yes, if you get the lifetime-of-device Costco deal and you end up with 1.08 (likely)... you can upgrade to 1.09 Pronto for nada.

New keyboard - I'll have to defer to Gabe on that. I would guess not yet in the current Costco peeks.

Argh. Can someone make sure the support folk at the 877 number know this ahead of time next time? I got the email announcing Pronto and the upgrades and sent mine in pretty much ASAP. Would have been nice to know that I had to wait not only for the Pronto's release, but for the April 6th date (where did that come from? The Amazon exclusivity?) as well.

I'll try and answer it all here:

    1) Pronto/Classic and old versions of Peek all connect to the Peek cloud. Let's keep it simple right.
    2) Chances are you'll get the softer keyboard, no matter where you purchase
    3) 1.09 Pronto/Classic is still being tested and slated to be released in the next couple of weeks

I am shocked that people are complaining about the keyboard. One of the things I hate about the iPhone is that I cannot do fact thumb typing on it, and I spend half the time correcting typing errors. One of the best thiings about the Peek is the solid feel keyboard.

So I got Amol's email a few days ago about the ways to upgrade if you're already a peekster. I'm #2, got a cable. Already upgraded from 1.04 to 1.08, but I'm not a CTP. At this point I don't want to bug anyone (haha) about becoming one, I'm sure it is crunch time right now. But seriously I have ants in my pants about Pronto. Any estimates about when we can download 1.09 as 'regular' users? Week? Month?

Just looking for a date to look forward to, if there is one.....

    Questions.

    Hardware.
Pronto, classic. What are the differences.

    Service.

    Software.

I'm sitting here with a classic, ver 1.04, i *just* bought at target. Should i spend the add'l 20 bucks and order the pronto?

Upgrades. The logical choice is to have the user send an email to peak and peak pushes or emails you the upgrade-binaries. Cable? geesh.

    Thanks,

@Hallster - to answer your questions...

Hardware - no significant difference. None at all if you want to upgrade from pre-1.09 versions to 1.09 Pronto.

Service - no customer service difference at all, and no difference in monthly service charges. Did you mean something else by "service"?

    Software - see this post
    http://boards.getpeek.com/comments.php?DiscussionID=439&page=1#Item_15
for a good rundown of 1.04 vs later versions.

    See this
    http://www.amazon.com/Peek-Pronto-Mobile-Messaging-Device/dp/B001VN2KBM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1239198187&sr=8-1
for a good description of Pronto's features.

As to your 1.04.. upgrading to Peek Pronto will be *free*. No need for you to pay for anything except shipping cost to Peek's New York City office, after Peek Pronto is released to the general public in a week or two.

Upgrades...Peek replaces all of the firmware on the device, rather than installing patches, when upgrades occur. Given that, my understanding is that the "update by email" technique would be problematic. The cable method was created by Peek earlier this year in response to their customer base saying "we can't live without our Peeks for the x days it'll take to ship our devices to/from New York". The cable upgrade process is still being worked through - Peek is great at involving its user community in development like that.

In any case, the primary way to do the upgrades (which are optional for you) is to send in your Peek. Given the anticipated demand for upgrades to Peek Pronto, Peek is also thinking about local "upgrade parties" ... so be on the lookout for those to be announced on these boards!

Keyboard ... not sure what your question is there?

Wiki ... Peek started one, but the level of participation in the wiki is much less than here at these boards.

Hope all of that helps. Let us know if there are more questions!

Hardware: no changes, other than a slightly "softer" keyboard

    Service:
Pronto: Push, Texting, 5 email accounts
Classic: Polling (~5 minute wait), no texting, 3 email accounts

    Software: Same software on both

Since you have a 1.04, wait a week (since it'll be about 5 days until Pronto is released) and call Care. They can arrange for you to send it in for a free upgrade to the Pronto software. No need to speed more.

Regarding upgrades; there are some technical limitations on over-the-air updates with the current Peek hardware/software which prevent this from being doable at present.

    @pambudgie & @crc

Thank you for the informative response!

I'm reading the links now... and of course, I have a few more questions. :-)

    txting.
Prolly unlike most of you, I bought this phone to txt with. heh, girls... they like to txt. :-) for me, email is an added bonus.

How does this device present itself to the the recipient/sender for SMS messages? gmail's SMS come's through as a unique 10 digit number. How do other carriers deal with emai/txt integration? Tmo and/or blackberry went to great lengths to make it *impossible* to txt to an email address. I know. I tried last night. It is Impossible. Did i mention it is impossible? I tried to shoe horn an SMS msg to an email address and Blackberry/TMO has roadblocks at every corner. Bleh. The only solution i see, the user would have to install an applet to get around TMO's Blackberry implementation. Anyway, I'm interested in your thoughts on that. In other words, SMS from Peek to Cell, ease of use.
(And lemme tell ya, my affinity for Tmo was not goin up las night! Grr... the carriers, their so dumb - marketing dweebs, really). Anyway, i digress...

I have yet to open the package... So, I guess the question is, what is the best path towards a pronto. Is Amazon shipping the pronto now?(If i read between the lines on pambudgie's response, it sounds like they are not)

I want to start with a pronto device/software. So i need to figure out shortest path to that. When is Peek going to release the freshmeat?

Technical limitations? Hmm... Not enough onboard non volatile memory?

Are there any "parties" planned in Orange County, CA? Fullerton? That's where I'm at. If you send me the cable, I could host one. if you send me a few cables, i could set up a few PCs to act as a upgrade station. That is, of course, if you ask nicely. :-) haha

Thanks! Look forward to your replies...

    @Hallster -

Texting: I'll defer to others who are MUCH more into texting than I am.

Upgrade: Correct - while Amazon is taking orders, shipment won't happen for a week or so. If you already have the Peek @1.04, you need to decide for yourself whether you want to:
1 - work with Peek Cust Care to ship the Peek to NY for your free upgrade. Peek Cust Care will have an official date for you, but I believe the release will occur sometime next week.. and upgrades are being prioritized (because so many folks want it)
2 - buy one from Amazon, return the one you have to Target (which sounds like it would cost you more.. I bet the Target one was cheaper than $80)
3 - buy a cable (which may take about a week to get to you) and upgrade yourself. Software should be available for you to download sometime next week.

Overall, I'd recommend the cable, IF you are tech-savvy.. because it'll give you more flexibility over the long haul. If you don't consider yourself tech-savvy.. look to send in your Peek, or look for an upgrade party.

Upgrade parties.. Peek asked for volunteers to help with that about a week ago, so I suspect they are in the planning stages. Probably figuring out where the highest concentrations of Peeksters are, vis-a-vis experienced Peeksters (who have already been through the sometimes-tortuous upgrade experience), that sort of thing. Stay tuned here for more news!

@hallster - no, I don't work at Peek, and most of the folks you see on these boards do not. One of the wonderful attributes about Peek is the community that's been built, based on Peek's interrelationship with their customer base.

If you see these names.. they represent some of the people who work at Peek:
    Amol (CEO)
Gabe (hard to say what he'd call himself... so I'll just let him do that :) )
    Tom (customer service guru)
    David (marketing)
    Dan (techie)

This list is not meant to be all-inclusive, just the paid Peeksters who post most frequently to the boards.

As to option 2 being cheapest... not following you there? I'm thinking you should have paid $50 or less at Target (and we've seen some $25 Peeks there)... so not sure why paying $80 to Amazon works out to be cheaper?

I agree option 2 represents the least hassle in the short term.

Hope that all helps! Let us know if you have more questions.

@hallster - if you want do-it-yourself upgrades in the future, you'll be wanting that $15 cable.. so I think the math is more like $50 + tax (at target, assuming you pick it up so no shipping) + $15 cable vs Amazon's $79 + tax + $15 cable.

Yes, to get any of the money-saving service plans, you need to call Peek Cust Care. They're open during weekdays (in spite of anything else you might read elsewhere).

    Dear Peek,

I am very excited about the possibility of buying your new Pronto. I saw on your website and in reviews that consumers could buy the device at Radio Shack approx. April 8. I stopped by my 2 nearest Radio Shack's and called two others. Their answer was one of the following:

    1. "What's a peek?"
    2. "It is not available at Radio Shack and I am not at liberty to discuss when/if it will arrive in our stores or at all." Mgr. also mumbled that they did not carry T-Mobile carrier devices (looked like they only carried Sprint, AT&T and Verizon in there)

Why is this? What went wrong? Can you update me on this blunder? Is it going to be fixed? Is it just a product chain delay?

I'm the type that prefers to go to a store and see and touch a product before I buy. (Call me old school I guess)

So, let's say I go to Target - all the way in NJ or Brooklyn ( I live in lower Manhattan) and buy the original Peek.

    A. What are the steps I need to take to upgrade it to Pronto status?
    B. How much will it cost if any?
    C. Do I lose any of the pronto functionality and upgrades (other than the slightly more tactile keyboard on Pronto)
    D. What's the time turnaround to get the upgrades?
    E. Can I do the upgrade by going direct to your Peek office in NYC?
    F. Do I also have to order and wait for a cable to come in the mail? or can I get it at your Peek office as well and how fast?

Since it's not at Radio Shack (for now) do you have a demo Pronto I can take off your hands from the NYC office?

Thank you in advance for answering all my questions..

    Eric,

Peek's are in trucks on the way to Radio Shack's throughout the US. Things got a little behind but rest assured they will be there.

If you want to be really old school, you swing by Peek HQ in NYC (39th and Madison so 4/5 to Grand Central) and you can chat with us about the product, get your hands on one and check it out for yourself. E-mail me at gabe @ getpeek.com if want to arrange a personal Peek tour and sure, if you want to take one off our hands we can do that too.

If you decide to go a Target and get a Peek your options to upgrade are simple :
    1) Schedule a walk-in visit for an upgrade
    2) Call our customer care at 1877-766-7335 and arrange a mail-in upgrade. We typically get your Peek back to you in a couple of days.
    3) Purchase an upgrade cable at Peek boutique http://boutique.getpeek.com/upgrade-cable-for-your-peek.html and do the upgrade yourself. You'll also be able to perform future updates. You can get that in person if you'd like too.

    Hope to see you soon.

@Etoro18 - to elaborate further on Gabe's reply...

Any Peek you happen to buy at Target right now will be on a software version lower than Peek Pronto. Upgrading to Peek Pronto, if you walk-in to Peek NYC's office or mail it in, is free.

There have been many, MANY improvements between prior versions and Peek Pronto. See the "shortcuts database" sticky note on these boards for an interesting look at the evolution of Peek's functionality.

    Hope all of that helps!

Just in case you haven't received the message, the upgrade link will be going out in waves so that Peek customer care isn't overwhelmed with confused users / bricked Peeks. The upgrade link is suppose to be going out to Wave I in the very near future. I don't know the timing between waves.

As an FYI, the CTPs themselves haven't been given the upgrade link to a gold code version of 1.09 yet, either. If a few hours means fixing another one or two niggles or getting the push e-mail working better, though, I'll wait the time (not like I have a whole lot of choice anyway).

    I stand corrected.

I just went back and re-read my Peek Pronto upgrade message and, indeed, the upgrade waves concern folks mailing their Peeks to Peek Central for upgrade. The message simply notes in passing that the updater will become available "next week" for folks who already have a cable.

I'm a little surprised that the final updater hasn't yet been released to the CTPs, but hey, maybe it's taking a little extra time to fix the flashing blue envelope of death. :-)
