    Hi jkimrey - were you able to try this out yet? I'll be honest, I have doubts it's going to work. In fact I've read the original post several times and I don't think the 3Jam number plays any role whatsoever in Peek to mobile-phone texting using Google Voice. Notice for example that Ben never mentions having to perform the seemingly impossible task of answering GV's validation call on your 3Jam number as a necessary step in the process.

    I think there's a little confusion in the original post about when it is describing a process to send texts between the Peek and mobile phones using Google Voice, and when it is describing the process of texts sent between two Peeksters using Google Voice. Notice,for example that in this apparently key passage: "If you want texts to be sent to your Peek as a text, not through your email box, then people will have to text to your full Google Voice SMS number: ..."

    What then follows as a format example is not an SMS number at all but an email address:

    "[your google voice number].[your number 3Jam assigned].[google voice id assigned to your 3Jam number]@txt.voice.google.com"

    There is no way a mobile phone user is going to be able to text (SMS) to this email address. But a Peekster could. So for true clarity that sentence should probably say:

    "If you want texts to be sent to your Peek as a text, not through your email box, then other Peeksters will have to text to -
    - [your google voice number].[your number 3Jam assigned].[google voice id assigned to your 3Jam number]@txt.voice.google.com" .

    Of course I might be completely wrong in my interpretation. And your idea of having the 3Jam number validated as the forwarding number in Google Voice - so that an SMS sent to your GV number is forwarded as a text to your 3Jam number, and then forwarded as a text to your Peek - is intriguing. But I can't see how to make it work. Maybe Ben will stop by again soon and clear up the mystery. Until then, good luck! - Mitch

    @mitch

    Your interpretation is correct, it sends as email.

    jiminy wants to do something that I'm pretty sure is impossible.

    I also don't know why it's important, as they show up in the inbox anyway, so I don't know what clutter is to be saved.

    mitch,

    Thanks for your feedback and clarification. And to answer your question - no, I haven't gotten any further in trying to set up the peek as an actual device in Google Voice.

    darkxsun,

    It's my understanding that if a text message is sent to a google voice number, the text message will show at www.google.com/voice, but not in a user's gmail account.

    Using the 'forward text message to my email address' causes the text message to appear in both www.google.com/voice as well as my gmail account.

    Not a huge deal, but I would just prefer the more clean approach of keeping both accounts separate. (I don't really want all of my text messages saved in both locations).

    Perhaps I'm incorrect in regards to how google voice works and this is not the case?

    As previous mentioned, the frustrating part is that if the number could only be 'verified' once by google voice, it would work as any other cell phone - able to receive a text message without going thru one's gmail.

    Perhaps eventually google will modify the validation procedures to allow validation via responding to a text message sent...

    Hi jkimrey - Yes, your conception of how Google Voice works is exactly accurate. You choose to have texts forwarded to your email account and, thanks to Peek's nearly-instantaneous push email retrieval with Gmail, this is what allows Peeks to use a GVoice number as a texting number. The Peek never actually retrieves from one's GVoice account, only from the Gmail account where the forwarded texts reside (although it does deposit a copy of outbound texts in the GVoice account, which is pretty cool.)

    I get what you'd like to accomplish, but as I say, I don't think it's currently possible. I'm sure like me (and probably most the folks here) you've already tried dialing the assigned 3Jam number just to see what happens. That's a brick wall, lol... Oh well.

    Hi Tom - That's great to know the duplicate issue with GVoice reply-texts will soon be fixed. Thanks very much to all you Peek folks for working on it, especially since I realize Peek's committment for texting is with 3Jam, not Google. If you don't mind my asking, which do you personally use for texting? I was using the 3Jam method before GVoice allowed the "forward texts to email" option, and the only reason I bailed was because of the 25 number limit 3Jam imposes. But I thought it worked absolutely fine. Do you use the 3Jam way for texting, and if so are you concerned about eventually bumping up against the 25 number limit?

    Cheers, Mitch

    @mitch

    I personally prefer the Google Voice method so that people can text and call the same number seamlessly. I would rather people not need to know which number to text and which number to call (or even that I have 2 devices to begin with). From what I understand this is not possible using 3Jam.

    it took me an hr and a half to understand what everyone is saying...i'm still testing out this txting via google voice --> into gmail thing. I agree with picomp about the calling and txting 1 number instead of multiple numbers.

    Hi picomp - You make a great point. I was so focused on the texting aspect that I overlooked the fact that the Google Voice method allows one number for both calls and texts. Thanks for your opinion - you, and maisquared too.

    Another key point that I would like to point out that I am not sure has been covered is how to get the special @txt.voice.google.com email address for each of your contacts:

    There are two ways to do this that I have found:
    First Way:
    1)Contact whomever you will be texting and have them text your GVoice #.
    2)Save the email address this comes from and compose texts as an email to the special @txt.voice.google.com

    Second Way:
    1) Log on to http://voice.google.com and send a text to whatever phone number you wish.
    2) When they respond to your original text the SMS will get forwarded to your email account --> Peek
    3) Save the email address just like in the first way.

    The advantage of the second way is that to the other person it appears to be a normal text conversation and it removes a little bit of human error on their end from the equation when sending the text to your GVoice # and not your usual cell phone number (Verizon, T-mobile, AT&T, etc..)

    Alright I hate to double post but I have a bone to pick about how the Peek servers seem to handle some of the GVoice stuff.

    Here goes:
    When I receive a text message from someone to my GVoice number the logical behavior would be to simply reply to that message to continue the conversation. After all reply (RE: etc etc) content that already exists in the body and subject line of the message is deleted I type a message out in the body of the email to the special @txt.voice.google.com number. Logically this would work to send a message that is less than 160 Chars in length. However the actual message gets garbled before it is received on the cellphone.

    Conversely if one composes a NEW (ie not simply hitting reply) message from scratch to the same special @txt.voice.google.com number the text message goes through exactly as it should with no problems regarding garbling the message.

    So I guess what is confusing about this is effectively the REPLY message does not behave the same way as the NEW message even though they should be the same judging by the visible content.

    Are there any guidance or planned future fixes for this odd issue?

    You can NOT delete all the content of a reply. It messes up the server. Google Voice won't send anything after 2 line breaks anyway.

    Also, this is not a Google Voice issue, Peek does this with all mail. Why is everyone obsessed with deleting all the quoted content? :-/

    @darkxsun

    Well I want to delete the quoted content because I am trying to operate within the constraints of 160 Chars. If all of this quoted content stays then I will not even be able to squeeze a message in.

    Google Voice deletes everything after 2 line breaks before it sends the message forward as a text, so if you hit reply it should drop all the quoted stuff anyway.
    The only problem that I've seen with replies so far is that it sends two of the same message, but tmel said they're working on that.

    Any estimated time for the reply fix to be applied? I just got my Peek Pronto and ran into it when I replied to an sms message sent through gv. If I send directly to the address, and not do a reply it is received once but reply it is duplicated as discussed.

    Thanks for working on the issue, and look forward to it being fixed to make replies easier.

    Happy Holidays to all.

    @volvov70 I have explained this at least 12 times in the forums. I think 6 of them were in this thread. The gist of it is, there is a server bug. You should store the contact in your list and create a new message each time instead of replying. Sorry this is a pain :(

    @tmel, eta on a fix? I think we passed your last estimate.
