So I was just accepted into the google voice test group and I have to say: It works amazingly with the peek. It has a feature to convert voicemails into text and then send them to your peek. In this way someone calls your google number (just a regular 10 digit number) and leaves a voicemail. Then, presto! It's on your peek in about 90 seconds. I think I'm finally going to be able to drop my cell phone completely :-) Has anyone else been able to use google voice? Any other cool features that are peek friendly?

I use Google Voice for my main communication needs. I rarely ever give out my "real" phone numbers any more. I've only really been able to use the transcribing feature. It'd be really neato if Google setup a SMS-EMail-SMS proxy like they do for SMS. (They should have set the ability to forward the SMS to an email, then be able to reply and it will send a SMS back appearing as if it came from your GV #...)

If I receive a SMS, it forwards to my cell phone, which I then have my SMS/MMS forwarded to my Peek. If I reply on my cell phone, it replies back to the person as if it was coming from my GV #...

Too bad they haven't done an email/sms feature yet. That'd be awesome. :)

Ditto. Google Voice should add the SMS feature described by @dalbaech. That would really be fabulous.

one question, is there any way for me to be able to register with google voice without needing a forwarding phone number? i got the invite but only got as far as the forwarding phone number set-up. since I'm deaf, I do not have a number i can use for that and are anxiously hoping that I can try the voicemail transcription since that can seriously boost my "contact-ability" for potential employers. I've had too many jobs not contacting me at all due to simply using e-mail address or a series of phone numbers so employers could call my videophone at home.

Google Voice works with VOIP numbers like skype or magic jack. If you don't find another way around, you could always pay a couple bucks a month for an internet number.

@deafcyclist -- You can go to "Settings | General" & check "Do Not Disturb" checkbox. That will immediately forward all calls to voicemail. But I don't know if you can get to this settings without registering at least 1 number.

I just signed up for the invite? How long does it normally take to get it?

My question is, if I have the google number and someone sends me the sms. It kicks it to my e-mail or somehow? Since the problem is not me sending someone a text and they reply, it works out great. But people can not send sms to me, which bugs me.

@horgrathi -- When someone sends sms to your google number, google forwards it as a sms to your registered phone that's marked as cell phone. It doesn't forward the sms as email. So at the moment, it cannot forward that sms to your Peek. You can reply to that sms either from the website, or from your cell phone. When you reply to that sms from your cell phone, the recipient will see your google number, not your real cell phone number.

Google has been sending out a lot of invites recently. I don't know if they're inviting everyone, or only a certain number of people.

you should get it pretty quick by now. it took me about a week or two. its pretty cool. i really would like to see some functionality come from it regarding integration with peek.

Vote on my suggestion to help convince the Peek Heads!

The SMS to Email gateway no longer works, sadly. It worked until about two months after Google Voice went public. It was yournumber@grandcentral.com. There's no way to send sms messages through the google voice number without a data plan if you haven't already been texted back and have their 406 number. So I have to tell people I have to numbers, one for text, and one for calls. With Peek I will have a third one! YAY!
