I can't be sure if this might be a technical or a money issue but, here goes... Yesterday my parents were in Crittenton, Kentucky where they had no signal for their Peek. I know this because I reached them on their Net10 cell phone. Both Net10 and Trac are Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNO's) in that they don't have their own networks so they contract with over 30 national and regional carriers. Is there a reason Peek couldn't contract with additional carriers (like Net10 or Trac do) in order to increase the Peek coverage area?

The Peek is locked to T-Mobile's network because of its SIM card and programming. I think it might be possible for it to roam on other networks, but I am not sure.

We'd be paying more money if we were leasing services from other companies.

Peeks work wherever T-Mobile has roaming agreements in place.

I see this discussion has been moved from the General to the Technical Support category. I believe it should be moved back to the General category in that improving Peek performance by adding to the coverage area is something many users might be interested in.

Your comment is better off suited for T-Mobile. I dislike to say that but Peek doesn't own its own telecommunications network.

I think I may have misinterpreted the business goals of Peek Inc. It may be their sole intent to provide alternative email service in urban areas. As a result there is no impetus to invest in greater coverage.

@Ken - Peek operates on the T-mobile network so where they have coverage, Peek has coverage.

Check out the coverage map at http://www.t-mobile.com/coverage/pcc.aspx

    Thanks!

@Ken. The problem is that Peek cannot control T-Mobile. As I've stated. They would have to design towers and deploy them for more service...But that would cost a fortune.

@Gabe - Glad you've joined the discussion. Please see my original post. I look forward to your comment. Also, the url you've provided presents two maps, one for Voice and one for Data. Which of the two does Peek operate on?

@Serkac Peek contracts with T-Mobile to provide network service. As other Mobile Virtual Network Operators have done, Peek could contact with additional providers to improve/enlarge their coverage area.

@Ken - Sorry I wasn't clear before. Peek uses the data component of the network only. Specifically the GPRS data connection. Our coverage is based on T-mobiles network coverage map which has various partners here in the US but predominantly ATT.

I don't think the Peek is using ATT service though (at least in MA)... my Peek does not work indoors at my home or office. ATT works indoors in both locations.

I just bought a Peek Pronto and I can't figure out how to get back to main page, add more emails, and text. I can't do this from home. My Peek only works 30 miles away. Any help?

    hello
    I´m new to the boards

I was just wondering if there was any future plans in place to extend the coverge areas?
Also if it was locked into the t-mobile coverage network, why is it that it doesnt work in canada, or
in europe for that matter, since most of europe has t-mobile coverage. I think I read somewheere that the
Pronto is triband 800 1800 and 1900 mhz. I´m sure the 1900 works here in germany.
I would be more than willing to try it out if Peek were to send me one :)

@chuck - we already know that Peeks work pretty well in Europe. Certainly we have top secret plans to spread Peek everywhere.
  2.
Then if you already know that, then it would be possible for me to purchase and use one while I am living in Germany?

You could Chuck, but it's going to be expensive. Even with the exchange rate. It would run you about $80 a month because of roaming charges that are incurred. Typically users go to Europe for a week on vacation and want to take their Peek and we charge them $20 for the week to cover costs.

The international plan is still very much a trial program.
  3.
    Ouch $80 a month.........
Is there any other payment options?
The reason I´m interested in the Peek, is I think it would be a cheap alternative to keeping in contact with my Family which lives in the states. And I would like to be able to use it where ever I want and not be tied down to the local community computers to rely on my emails and things.

Too bad the peek does not have WiFi then it could be used worldwide with no extra charges.
  4.
Sorry, I'm a little unclear about the international use of Peek. I wonder if someone at Peek could clarify things.

As I understand it, you use T-Mobile as the carrier. Since T-Mobile is in the UK and some places in Europe, like Germany, would it work over there?

I go to the UK a couple of times a year -- once in the winter for about 2 weeks and once in the summer for 3-4 weeks. Is there a way to use my Peek for email when I'm there? I wouldn't need international coverage the rest of the time, but it sure would be handy to have Peek work while I'm abroad.

And if this service exists, how do I activate it? If this service doesn't exist, are you planning to offer it anytime soon? (It would be a really good idea!!)

    Many thanks.

I suppose to activate it you'd have to call in and ask about it.

Well because Peek is headquartered and contracting with US companies, it would be international roaming regardless if the only place it were to be used is in Europe. To put it simply, if Peek had a contract with T-Mobile UK for local use there then it may be used locally in the United Kingdom.

Also, it would be $100 total and not $80 if you include the $20 base (etc.).

Is it possible to use a different Sim-Card from a german carrier? I bought a Peek Classic and want to use it in germany with my own Sim-Card.

Unless the German carrier has specific arrangements to get your data to Peek's servers, I don't think it would work. Peek says you can't swap SIMs, even between Peeks.

It's maybe like someone bringing their GSM phone from Germany to the US, putting in a locally purchased SIM, and expecting to be able to call Munich as a local call.

Suasnne81 - it won't work. You can't change SIM cards. We are currently beta testing international roaming. For as additional fee you can try it out. Just email care@getpeek.com for the details or give us a call.

I have yet to find a place where my Peek didn't have coverage. I've used it from Dana Point CA to a mountain top in Estes Park CO to Kansas to Bloomington Indiana to Vero Beach FL and I sent mails and text on board American Airlines from Wichita to Vegas and around most cities across the border in Mexico with no drop outs. Sweet!
