    http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/18/peek-pronto-is-a-new-peek-device-on-its-way/

This was posted on Engadget recently...followed by a comment on the GeekyPeek.com blog...

Hmm? Looks like new hardware....faster processor..more memory and storage? 3g? OR is it software version 1.09? I am sure we won't get any revealing comments from the Peek guys/gals but we can all speculate can't we!?

    UPDATE:

    Just found this as well:

    http://i.gizmodo.com/5174806/peek-emailer-spotted-running-a-very-fuzzy-maps-app

Weather? Some new kind of service offered by Peek (weather, calendars etc) or an expanded PeekService.com type deal? (or just an attached image to an email that means nothing)

    Exciting!!

That image on gizmodo is from the Ent weather app. It's the IR satellite image.

The gizmodo thing isn't what they think it is.

It is the great new radar maps attachment function of Ent (ent@retroforth.org). Ent is great and every peek user should have the address in their contacts list.

    If you mail it

    weather city, state

in the Subject line, you'll get the current forecast with a number of radar maps added as attachments.

    That's what the picture is.
  1.
I love ENT for weather. I am not sure what else it does but I send an email for my weather updates.

Ok lets not turn this into a praise-a-thon for Ent...this is a thread about the Engadget Peek Pronto leak...I am hoping that this is something to do with v 1.09 and not an entirely new piece of hardware. But even if it is then that's still exciting news.
  2.
About the leak. I have heard about it and all I can say is Hmmmmm.

Ok OK Ok! Allow me to set the record straight. At SOME POINT in the future there will PROBABLY be a new Peek device, that MAY have features that SOME will want, and that SOME will not.

However, the big announcement regarding Peek is .........

    Polaroid is gone.
I saw someone driving a Desoto car on Route 1 (Federal Highway).
I used to have an Amiga. DEC is gone. Wang (for whom I worked) is mostly gone.
Ma Bell was big, and got chopped up and now, like the chopped up pieces of a planaria that have regrown, it s getting big again.
Videx used to make video boards for Apple ][ and now it makes electronic locks.

But, Peek is alive and hopefully will exist for a long time. (I hope we early adopters get a chance to buy their stock should they ever go public)
  3.
for one thing, the peek user interface of the "so-called" weather Peek Pronto is the same as the original. Notice that the bar on top is the same as always, which is quite unusual for newer products being the same as older interfaces. Peek would at least add some changes. Like people said, the guy taking the fraud picture was using Ent, which sends you updates on weather to your peek. There is a %1 chance that it's a new Peek Pronto, with the weird gray colors.

I truly believe that Pronto represents 1.09 based on the teasers quoted time of reveal (coming soon '09.) it might be that they release an updated Peek as well (faster clockspeed etc) but I don't think it would known as any more then the Peek with a newer model # (MP3 I guess?) rather then a wholly new separate-named model for business. With that might come some new colors..
  4.
I am going to reveal everything I know about the Pronto...I may get in trouble for this so I hope it makes you happy.
    Peek Pronto Features are:
    1) Free cable T.V.
    2) Lock picking device
    3) Terror Alert Emergency Kit
    4) Microwave
    5) Coffee maker
    6) can opener, screwdriver and knife
    7) snow tires and car jack

I hope these new features will make everyones life easier!! lol!!

@phil - no, 1.09 will not have xtify capabilities. The 1.09 version is being tested now (with a very small group)... the xtify contest doesn't end until April. Timing is close, but not close enough.
  5.
I thought that someone from the Peek team said that xifty will be used for 1.09. Since it's still not out yet, we can't be 100% sure.

i wish the peek guys would come out with it already. I was thinking about buying a peek - but im not going to drop $50 if new hardware is coming out.

And how easy/hard is it to upgrade firmware yourself?

Upgrading the software is relatively easy if everything goes correctly.

In my email tonight from Amol Sarva= The good news for you Peeksters is that we want all of you to have the software that will be powering Pronto - for free. Next week I'm going to let you know the details of how you can upgrade your Peek so that you can have the same software that will be on Pronto. I think you're going to like it!

yeah that's great. but a few thoughts.

    1) to get it, we need the $15 cable or send it in.

    2) what is the new hardware has 3G or other enhancements that make the software run better/faster.

    3) what if some of the new features don't work on the old peeks? or future software updates.

    4) the new peek won't need a "special cable" to do updates - or updates can be done via wireless.

I just they would have come out and said it was hardware so I could have held off on buying a peek. yeah i got a good deal. but one of my biggest issues is how slow it is.

@Tom, So basically if send my Peek 1.07 in for an upgrade to the 1.09 plus the few new Pronto features the "Classic" will run, I lose my unlimited texting? If I want my Peek to be faster and better I lose one of its two features? If this is true I'm very disappointed. I do not want to buy a new piece of hardware, and I would love to run a faster Peek, less glitchy typing, push mail, but why lose texting? If by upgrading I lose texting you may have to count me off the Peek bandwagon, along with my two accounts and myriad recommendations.

So the question then is can we pay 20$ to get the full Peek Pronto software upgrade?? To me thats not a whole lot to ask for really considering I have no contract and a reasonable price for the hardware to begin with.

@piqued - all upgrades from older versions of the software (1.04/06/07/08) will be to Pronto which is the premium version with all cool Peek features and will be for free.

I called customer service but got a very non answer.

I ordered a Peek yesterday. Tom responded to an email but didn't warn me that buying it last night was a bad idea (come on man, you could have dropped a hint).

One question for now: Is the hardware of the one I ordered yesterday (shipping with 1.08 I'm assuming) IDENTICAL to the hardware of the Pronto? I saw a comment about a keyboard change in the PR release on Engadget.

    Reposting this here!

Peek Classic will not have the ability to send text messages. However, there are *2* versions of 1.09.

There is Peek Classic 1.09, and Peek Pronto 1.09, both have a different set of features.

Anyone running 1.04, 1.06, 1.07 or 1.08 will be grandfathered into Peek Pronto 1.09 with no additional cost.

The keyboard change is softer keys. Our first "run" of devices had a stiffer keyboard. We made a small modification later to make the keys easier to press.

For example, many of us at Peek HQ have early production hardware Peeks and it takes a little more work to press the keys, but on my most recent test Peek it's perfect.

    Make sense?

We've got a few of the original ones floating around here at Care. They work out well, but you just need to mash on them for a bit to loosen them up!
