The Peek and Google Voice

Warning: Technical explanations below

I recently got invited to Google Voice and have been playing around with the SMS and my Peek. So far, I have been able to hand out one number to friends and family to text me. I don't have to text them first and I'm not limited to 25 people.

Let me give you an overview of how the texting system works with Peek.

When a text is sent out with the Peek, it is processed in the Peek systems, then sent to 3Jam, then sent to the carrier & cell phone. When the text is coming from the cell phone, it follows this line in reverse. As you may or may not know, each Peek is provided with 25 virtual numbers. As you text a number, one of these virtual numbers is attached to that mobile number.

Example:
Peek Text to 2125557000
Text sent to 3Jam
3Jam assigns number 4243541000 to 2125557000
Message on the receiving end shows it came from 4243547000

=====================================================================================================================

Google Voice

Google Voice changes this. It changes this to ONE number, your friends/family can share this number, and you can text Peek-to-Peek. The only limitation is that they have to text your Google Voice number first.

To get started using Google Voice, you'll need to wait for an invitation. You can sign up for and invitation here: https://services.google.com/fb/forms/googlevoiceinvite/

Once you receive your invite, please follow the setup wizard on the site to get started. You do have to enter an existing phone that you use. If you want this for your Peek only, you can choose not forward message to your phone by going to Settings > Phones, and uncheck the phone. Also, go to Settings > Voicemail & SMS, make sure SMS Forwarding is selected to forward SMS messages to your email address.

Great! You're almost ready. Next you'll need to send a text from your Peek to your Google Voice. 3Jam will assign a number to Google Voice. You will see this number come up in Google Voice once the text is received.

Next, have people text your Google Voice number. You only need to give them your Google Voice number. When Google Voice receives the text, it will forward it to your email address. Pay attention to the From field.

In the From field you will see an email address in this format: 12125551234.14243541000.tyldksal1@txt.voice.google.com

Here's the break down:
12125551234 - your Google Voice Number
14243541000 - number the message was sent from. If from a Peek, this number is a number from 3Jam
tyldksal1 - unique ID Google Voice assigned to the number the message came from. Works similar to how 3Jam works for Peek. Only you're not limit to 25 but people, but they have to text your Google Voice first.

Now, to send a reply to them on your Peek you have to type in that entire email address: 12125551234.14243541000.tyldksal1@txt.voice.google.com

Messy right? Thank goodness for an address book.

When you send a message from your Peek in the above manner, the same text-message traveling routine written above applies, however, now after leaving (from Peek device) or before hitting (to Peek device) 3Jam it goes to Google Voice. Google Voice parses that To field apart: Your number, Text number to send SMS too, Google Voice Id assigned to the Text number. The message gets routed to your account (your number), then Google Voice sends the text message out from your account as a text message to the Text number. You can see texts you send from your Peek on Google Voice because of this.

The texting Peek-to-Peek is capable because Google Voice routes the text as a text to the number you specified (along with its ID). On the Peek it will show as a text. When you or the other Peekster receive a text from another Peekster, the text category of the message stops at Google Voice, and then forwards the text to your or the other Peekster's email account as an email message, if they use your Google Voice number only. If they send a text message from their Peek in that messy format, [your google voice number].[your number 3Jam assigned to your voice number].[google voice id assigned to your 3Jam number]@txt.voice.google.com, the message will go to from Device > Peek > 3Jam > Google Voice > 3Jam > Peek > Device (sent as text the whole way). It's a lot of hoops to go through but Peek-to-Peek texting works using Google Voice.

=====================================================================================================================

To summarize:
After setting up Google Voice, go to Settings > Phones, uncheck phone
Next go to Settings > Voicemail & SMS, SMS forwarding - make sure your email address is used for forwarding
This email address should be on your Peek

Text your Google voice number from your Peek - 3Jam will assign a number to this number, Google Voice will assign an Id to this 3Jam number

If you want texts to be sent to your Peek as a text, not through your email box, then people will have to text to your full Google Voice SMS number: [your google voice number].[your number 3Jam assigned].[google voice id assigned to your 3Jam number]@txt.voice.google.com

Give your Google Voice number to people to text to - they have to text you first before you can respond

Reply back to their text on your Peek in this format: [your google voice number].[their number].[google voice id assigned to their number]@txt.voice.google.com - message goes through as text, works for Peek-to-Peek texting

And that's basically it! Last time I checked, Google Voice does not support short numbers (55555). When they do, you to can vote for your favorite American Idol from your Peek!

Enjoy texting on the Peek with Google Voice!

-Ben

The other 10k is stored on the Peek servers for a total of 12k readable per email message.”

First a couple of questions of tmel:

How long is the other 10k currently stored on the Peek servers?

How long are the attachments currently stored on the Peek servers?
(It appears to be more than 6 weeks, but less than 6 months.)

Next a comment: For those who commute underground and through other dead zones, the remaining 10K can be downloaded and stored locally when the signal is good and then read while the Peek is in airplane mode (to save battery charge).

I ordered a Pronto this morning, trusting that texting was going to be a little simpler than the short demo I saw on the site. The owner said "all you need to do is enter the cell phone number of the person you want to contact" and type the message. No problem... but I presume that you can simply reply to someone once the text conversation has begun, and that you don't have to retype the entire cell number each time you want to send a message back... right?

I received my Peek back in November and since then have been working on a number of applications to make it more useful to me.

As many of you know, my first significant application is Ent, which is a set of auto-responders that provide a variety of information to Peek (and other email) users. It's become pretty popular, with a fairly steady amount of use.

More recently I turned my attention towards the IM situation. As of today I've been using my Peek to communicate with IRC for three weeks, and Google Talk (Jabber) for the last few days. As promised in the Peek chat over at http://www.dreamers-inc.com/chat/ I'm releasing my clients (collectively called Karere) in hopes they prove helpful to others.

Warning: this is *not* really intended for the average user yet. You'll need to be able to setup a PHP environment with IMAP, sockets, and a working mail() function. It's only been tested on Linux and OS X currently.

Now that my warning is out of the way, here's how it works:

1) Karere runs on a desktop computer
1a) You will need to modify the source for some configuration pieces
1b) These areas are documented in the source
2) It connects to an IM network (IRC or Jabber/Google Talk)
3) Any messages addressed to you (or for IRC, in a channel you are in) get sent to your email
4) You can send messages to a *second* email account and have them sent to the IM network
4a) The second account currently needs to be a gmail account
4b) The second account can't be used for anything else
4c) The subject line is the channel or Google Talk/Jabber user
4d) The body is the message
4e) Yes, you do have to type out the full channel name or email address for Google Talk/Jabber

You'll get one email for each message addressed to you, with hints in the subject to help identify the source.

This *can* lead to a lot of email, but as I said - it does work, and it gets you IM today. Response times will be much better once 1.09 comes out, as that will give push email reducing wait times between incoming messages and responses to a few seconds to a minute rather than several minutes as it currently sits.

So, if you want to try them, get the code at http://charleschilders.com/karere/karere-alpha.tar.gz

So I was just accepted into the google voice test group and I have to say: It works amazingly with the peek. It has a feature to convert voicemails into text and then send them to your peek. In this way someone calls your google number (just a regular 10 digit number) and leaves a voicemail. Then, presto! It's on your peek in about 90 seconds. I think I'm finally going to be able to drop my cell phone completely :-) Has anyone else been able to use google voice? Any other cool features that are peek friendly?

I'm currently working on an extremely simple page of text with as much info as I can put on of services and keyboard shortcuts so we can just print one sheet and pass it on to new peekster and for our own references of the services like ent and askpeek.

However, I'm just not sure how to properly credit the owner and creators of these services without cluttering up the printout. I'm thinking of just making a small text line of the associated sites that these info was lifted from on the bottom of each section. I'll have to ask the creator/owners first though.

This page only focus on maximum clarity with as much essential info possible onto a single page. I'm still adding ent, entx, askpeek, and some other commands to the lists but I would like to see if anybody here could provide links to other services and info on keyboard shortcuts. Remember, I only want services that does not require online action like signing up for ping.fm. I only want to list commands-via-e-mail based service like CRC's awesome ent & entx.

I will wait until I find out how crc and respective creator/owner feels about this before posting the link to the quickguide though.

I wanted to make the quickguide so my girlfriend can review it for her new peek (she finally got it in the mail from me today :D ) and for me to print it out and give it to a few friends that I got onto the peeks. But since I haven't really seen any site that collaborated all of these info into one single page to be printed out, I might as well try to share it and help everyone out a little. So once I post the link, any constructive criticism and corrections is welcome. :)

Tip: Workaround for reading ALL unread Gmail

First off, I love Peek, so even though this is a long post, it is not a rant, because I am writing it with a happy face. Consider this simply a description of a problem I had using Peek and Gmail, and a workaround I am using to keep using Gmail and Peek after a recent service change.

Please note... My only reason for posting this is in case it can be helpful for someone else facing a similar issue, and my hope is that it will allow such folks to keep using their Peek and their Gmail.

The disclaimer: I am not an employee of Peek or of Gmail, so please consider this a use-at-your-own-risk guide, and I do not guarantee it to work in all cases or without error. I do suggest reading all of the steps first before actually performing any steps, just to make sure that you think all of the steps will work for you and that you know how to do them without getting stuck halfway through. This means use the following info at your own risk, and sorry, I don't provide tech support. It is what it is, though I hope it's nothing except helpful to all.

The history:

Gmail lets you set up "filters" to move your mail from your Inbox into an archive. Setting up a filter rule with "Skip Inbox" lets you decide which messages you want to keep in your Inbox or not. Your filter rules can also leave the message as unread, or mark it as read. So in Gmail, it is possible to have a message that is both archived and unread.

One reason to use such a filtering rule is if you consider the filtered mail to be less important, and you'd prefer not to see such email. To people who filter for this reason, it was annoying to see these messages on their Peek. They're trying to use Gmail filters to weed out mail and would prefer that Peek only downloaded unread messages still in the Inbox.

Another reason to use such a filtering rule is if you consider the filtered mail to be more important, and you'd prefer to organize such email using labels or other techniques in Gmail. In this manner, organized email that skips the Inbox is of higher priority, and the Inbox is just those few remaining emails that don't fit any filter criteria.

Personally, I fit in the second criteria. I had one filter set up to skip the inbox and label it "Personal" if it was sent straight to my email address. I also used Gmail's POP and IMAP to check other accounts, so I had separate filters set up to move these to other labels as well. Sure, I didn't have to have them "Skip Inbox", but it saved me the step of having to archive or clean up my mail later, as well as gave me the benefit of knowing anything in my Inbox was uncategorized and could be treated as such.

The change:

Peek recently changed the service so that now the Peek service only downloads unread mail in my Inbox to my Peek device. This means the majority of my mail, which is filtered by Gmail, is unreadable to me on my Peek device. Only those stray mail still in my Inbox -- and that is generally mail from people mailing me for the first time, or from people that I get mail from so infrequently that I have not bothered to add them to the filter, or it is spam. NOTE: While this change inconvenienced me, I'm sure it made LOTS of other Peek users happy by not delivering mail they'd just delete from their Peek anyway.

The manual workaround (for people with few filters):

The brute-force workaround is to manually adjust all your filters to uncheck the "Skip Inbox" part of the filter. If you only have one or two filters, this is probably no big deal to you. If you have lots of filters, this can take a LOT of time. Also, looking forward with a hopeful attitude, if Peek ever adjusts their service to give folks the option of having the service download unread messages that are not in the Inbox, I was looking for a better solution so that I could go back once the service was adjusted.

The more-detailed-to-describe, but faster-to-perform workaround (for people with so many filters the thought of editing them makes them very sad):

Gmail Labs now has an "Filter Import/Export" feature. If you don't know what Gmail Labs is, check out their blog posting announcing the Labs feature here ( http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2008/06/introducing-gmail-labs.html ). Once you're using Gmail Labs, when you click the Settings tab in Gmail, you'll have an extra tab called "Labs". Scroll down to the "Filter Import/Export" and make sure you click "Enable" and then scroll down all the way to the bottom and be sure to click "Save Changes".

Now when you go back to the Settings and go to the Filters tab, you have additional options. At Select, click All to select all the filters, then click Export. When I did this, it let me save a file called mailFilters.xml which I saved to my Desktop. Once downloaded, make a copy of it so you have a backup. Then open mailFilters.xml in Notepad and do a search and replace, searching for

<apps:property name='shouldArchive' value='true'/>

and replacing it with nothing, just an empty text box. Do a Replace All, and after the search/replace finishes, save the file.

Back in Gmail at the Filters tab in Settings, do the Select All again and this time click Delete. This will kill all your filters. It will tell you as it deletes each one and if it has problems deleting any.

Assuming your filters are all gone from Gmail, it's time to re-import your modified filters... just click the link "Import Filters" then the button "Choose File" and select your newly-modified mailFilters.xml file, then click "Open File".

A list of filters will appear. You might assume that all your modified filters have been imported... they have not. Make sure all your filters are checked (Select All is your friend again if they are not all automatically checked)... and scroll down and click "Create filters". Much like with the filter deletion, Gmail puts up a box on the page to keep you informed of filter progress and any errors.

With that done, you should now have all your filters back, but without any "Skip Inbox" functionality, so all your messages should go to your Peek. And if Peek ever decides to adjust things to give us the option of going back to being able to read unread messages in our Gmail archive, then make sure to hang on to that copy you made of the mailFilters.xml file. Just delete out your existing filters (assuming you haven't made any more manual changes that you want to re-export and keep) and then re-import your original filters from your mailFilters.xml file. Similarly, if somewhere during this process, you find out you can't import your adjusted filter file and you need to start over or go back to the way things were, you might be able to re-import the original file nevertheless, or in worst case, use it as a reference if you ever have to manually recreate your filters sometime down the road.

Good luck all!

Jeff

An update on the use of shortened URL’s and Retroforth to obtain the contents of web pages without the need to spell out the full URL.

1. Tinyurl.com does not take a snapshot of the URL that it makes tiny. Instead, it simply keeps track of what URL has been shortened to the tinyurl.

This means that if the URL is not for a static page, but instead for an ever changing one, you can reach that ever changing web page with the same tinyurl.

Put differently, if you have a favorite webpage and you convert its URL to a tinyurl, you can always find the latest postings using the same tinyurl.

2. Nor do you have to remember the 6 alphanumerics that make up the tinyurl page to obtain the latest posting. Peek has a “sent” folder. If you leave one email there that you sent to Retroforth to obtain the contents of the underlying URL, all you have to do to reach it again is forward that same email to Retroforth, after removing “Fwd:” from the subject line and replacing it with “www”.

Now, if Retroforth could figure out a way to spot the numerous links that appear at the top of the URL that it retrieves, and move them all down to the bottom of the text. One blog that I enjoy reading has some 300 links which have to be waded through before the substance of the blog starts.

Twitter fans presumably know this already, but it was new to me.

If you ask ENT to collect and send a web page using a tinyurl or equivalent shortened URL, it will faithfully retrieve it.

For example, sending an email to ENT with the subject line

WWW http://tinyurl.com/ygx2mqt
(the latter, a tinyurl that I obtained at a computer)

gets you a collection of article summaries from the New York Times on the US Geological Survey. The above URL it obviously easier to get into the subject line than the full URL, which is:

http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/organizations/u/united_states_geological_survey/index.html?offset=90&s=newest

Now to convince various services that supply brief summaries with full URLs to supply them with shortened URLs

I hooked up ping.fm instead of Twittermail because, for some reason, Twittermail doesn't like my credentials (and the Twittermail people have not replied to my bug report for days). Unfortunately neither has a way to fire my friends' updates back at me.

Also unfortunately, PeekFeed doesn't seem able to authenticate with Twitter and get my Home feed. I just want to get a periodic text digest (hourly) of new updates on my Twitter home. Is this doable without jumping around through Yahoo Pipes and other services?

I get a lot of mileage out of Ent's Twitter tools. They're great. BIG thanks for setting them up, crc.

One annoying thing that seems to be happening more and more is a bug in the @timeline command. When Ent sends back my timeline it prefaces the first tweet with:

Sorry, but Ent wasn't able to understand your request. Try sending 'help' as a subject to see what requests Ent can handle.
For the record, your request was: Mail delivery failed: returning message to sender

It crams it all together so the first tweet looks like:

Sorry, but Ent wasn't able to understand your request. Try sending 'help' as a subject to see what requests Ent can handle.
For the record, your request was: Mail delivery failed: returning message to senderTwitterMail (TwítterMail)
Sorry people we're still offline.. @Boris who owns the TwitterMail domain name needs to update the DNS. #twittermail

I'm not putting anything in the body, just @timeline in the subject, from my Peek, via Gmail.

Anything else I can do to help this be resolved?

Have a blog, a profile on a famous discussion board about your favorite gadget (http://boards.getpeek.com/account/73/), or just want a simple way to shout to the world your approximate location?

Well, look no further than the location widget provided by as part of the quality Jetpackshark family of applications.

It may not slice or dice, but it works by showing your location on a map with an indication of how long ago the location was updated (i.e. its "freshness" date).

Keep in mind that this works differently based on whether your Peek falls into one category or another:

I Don't have GPS enabled on my Peek
===================================

Simple! Simply send an email to location@jetpackshark.com with your current location in the subject line. You can use a zip code, or city, of course, but you might want to try adding a street for more accurate location goodness.

In a reply message you'll receive a link to the widget. If you ever want to update your location, just send another message to location@jetpackshark.com with your new location in the subject.

Please note that this does not sign you up for any services like weather alerts, etc. You're just setting a location and nothing more.

I Have GPS enabled on my Peek
=============================

As of this writing - there are around 10 who were included in the initial beta of Peeks reporting their location courtesy of the nice folks at Xtify. (send an email to dan -at- getpeek to say you're interested for the next round of sign-ups!)

You can send an email to location@jetpackshark.com or to me (mark -dot- bowytz -at- gmail -dot- com) and you'll get a link. However, thanks to the magic that Xtify does, your location will update more frequently.

Questions? Thoughts? Comments??

All are welcome - let me know!

Thanks,
Mark

I know some of this has been covered before on the board (and hope i am not stepping on any toes). I just wanted to see it in one place. Also if anyone has any to add, bring it :)

(also not in any particular order)

1. Snapask - http://snapask.com/ - Email ask at snapask dot com with command and query in subject
Seems to be fairly responsive for me (times of response ranging from 1-10 minutes)
2. RememberTheMilk - http://www.rememberthemilk.com/ - you are given a 'post' email address to add 'tasks' to your calendar. Integrates with Google calendar also.
3. Google Alerts - http://www.google.com/alerts - get notified of google query updates
4. Remindr - http://www.remindr.info/ - web based, setup reminders, no signup, and easy
(thanks to my buddy billyverden for tellin me this one)
5. of course Yahoo! Alerts - http://alerts.yahoo.com/
6. and Windows Live Alerts - http://alerts.live.com/Alerts/
7. Track a Package - Fedex - track at fedex dot com . and UPS - totaltrack at ups dot com .
Both use blank subject with tracking number in body
8. Ping.fm - http://ping.fm - update blogs. "simple service that makes updating your social
networks a snap"
9. RSSFwd - http://www.rssfwd.com/ - I tried this one and it was 'spotty at best' for me
if you have better luck, let me know. (from the looks i think you could run your own 'server' -
http://rubyforge.org/projects/rssfwd/)
10. FeedMyInbox - http://www.feedmyinbox.com/ - haven't tried this one yet
11. CapeMail? - http://developer.capeclear.com/capemail - email google@capeclear.com
don't know if this one still works or not.
12. Jott - http://jott.com - looks interesting although not directly 'email' service

Alot of various info for accessing stuff by email (some deprecated) is available at http://www.faqs.org/faqs/internet-services/access-via-email/

If you have your computer at home on all the time rss2email is a simple program to send yourself favorite RSS feed updates - http://rss2email.infogami.com/ and a Web UI at http://rss2email.infogami.com/webui also a page on using it at http://www.linux.com/articles/50469 , but i never could get the webui to work

FYI, been using rss2email and it does great.
